Women

Written by Ila Bhimshetty

Spanning decades, feminism has played a critical role in society. From the wage gap to beauty standards imposed on women, feminism addresses many issues in today’s world. However, the recent controversies surrounding this topic has created a bit of a dilemma in today’s society.

What exactly is feminism?

Feminism: The endorsement of women’s rights in its entirety, while maintaining equality between the sexes.

The whole goal of feminism is to try and create an environment where everyone is treated with respect. Even though there have been many efforts to improve the lives of women, some have had a bigger impact than others.

One step yesterday...Two steps today

Women’s rights has not been a one day issue. It has taken place over a huge timeline, decades even. While there have been many movements set on establishing a solid foundation for the years to come, one of the most important would have to be The Woman’s Rights Movement in the 19th century. This movement was centered around suffrage, also known as the right to vote. One of the most iconic endeavors took place in Seneca Falls, New York, the year of 1848. The meeting was led by Elizabeth Cady Stanton, and more than 300 people attended this gathering. The accord was approved, at last, with the support of Frederick Douglass. Fast forward to the end of the movement, the adoption of the Constitution, the 19th amendment constituted voting rights for all American women in 1960.

Staying in the present

Feminism is an ongoing movement and it will continue to be a driving force for a prolonged period of time. Currently, we have entered the third wave touching upon various topics such as politics, family and sexuality. Slowly, over time, we are making progress. Remember that together anything is within our reach.
