Women's Sports

By: Sahana Vivek

The Superbowl is a huge annual event within the sports industry. It’s the men's American football finals, and is widely advertised across America. Women’s sports never gets that kind of recognition, and most

of their games and events are rarely advertised in the media. The only way we can solve this issue, is by getting men involved. The delegation of Italy proposes we encourage male allies. Men far outnumber women in sports media. Male allies need to raise their voices, too, and

we should call upon countries to constantly look for women crossover opportunities with men’s sports, to gain them more recognition. t’s important to understand that the only way to achieve equality within any realm, is to encourage both genders to support one another.

We need to think about how only 0.4% of women’s sports are being covered in the media. That’s an extremely low number, with the rest of women’s sports going unrecognized and disregarded, which is exactly what creates the gender inequality in the first place. The delegation of Italy proposes we strengthen legislation that requires news organizations to commit to consistent women’s sports coverage. If news organizations don’t commit to consistent women’s sports coverage, then they’re helping perpetuate the biased, inaccurate belief that fans don’t care about women’s sports. You can’t build a following for women’s sports when fans don’t know when or where they’ll find games or features or in-depth analysis. If we could follow women’s sport in season and out of season, around the calendar like we do men’s sport, then that would change the landscape

We have reached a point in today’s society where we should be able to accept the fact that women and men can do the exact same things. Where we have accepted the fact the some women are as strong as men, as smart as men, and as diligent as men. It is with the belief that this society is alive and well, that the delegation of Italy proposes the creation of a widespread multi-gender, co-ed sports division of sports. This will create further equity among the sexes, as they are working together. In addition, this will automatically decrease the wage gap, as both sexes will be on the same team, forcing their pay to be equal. Regarding the problem of men and women being on different physical levels, the UN can encourage thorough, invigorating tryout systems for these teams, to ensure that those on a single team are physically fit in the same way.

As we’ve established, there’s a major inequality between men and women athletes. A huge part of this problem is that commercial investment and media coverage of women’s sport remains shockingly low, particularly in comparison to the deals done in men’s sport. Women’s sport sponsorship accounted for only 0.4% of total sports sponsorship between 2015 and 2017. To improve this, the delegation of Italy proposes targeting big companies, like Nike and Under Armour, and encourage them to form mutually beneficial partnerships with women. When more companies sponsor women athletes, women are gaining more money and businesses are gaining media coverage. Encouraging companies to start more sponsorship's is a beneficial way to terminate inequality in sports.
