Book Recommendations On Feminism

Feminism, as we know, has been an endless fight. Books by women on this topic have played a vital role in both spreading the ideas of feminism and in dismantling patriarchy. Whether you are fond of fantasy, non-fiction, or essays, here is a list of feminist works for you.

The Handmaid's Tale by Margaret Atwood. One of the most amazing books on feminism ever. This tale is set in future America where women are reduced to reproductive usefulness. The sequel to this book, The Testaments, was released in 2019.

We Should All Be Feminists by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie. This book is a short essay based on the TedTalk that Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie gave, which suggests some ways that we should raise our children in order to ensure a fair and equal future for them.

A Room Of One's Own by Virginia Woolf. This is an essay surrounding the idea that women are not intrinsically lesser writers due to their gender, and concerns the restrictions placed on their education by the patriarchal society.

Little Women by Louisa May Alcott. This is a story of four sisters, Jo, Meg, Beth, and Amy, and takes place in 1868. It is one of the best classic books ever written.

Asking For It by Louise O'Neill. This is a book that is sure to stick with you forever. The story follows a mean girl who is a bully, a liar, and a cheater who is assaulted. This book talks about rape culture and it is a definite must read. However, bewarned of the triggers.

The Complete Poems of Emily Dickinson. This is my personal favorite poetry book of all times. These poems written in 1840 are still relevant in these times. They are all extremely important, and each poem is beautifully crafted.

The Bell Jar by Sylvia Plath. The Bell Jar concerns the socially acceptable identity. Esther is expected to become a housewife and a self-sufficient woman, but has no option to achieve independence and lead her own life.

The Second Sex by Simone de Beauvoir. This book was written in 1949 by author and philosopher de Beauvoir. This is an informative book, and the author has a wonderful and sharp writing style.

Hopefully, you will enjoy these books and take away something from them. Happy reading!
